Par ailleurs, ils se stockent, se transportent et s\u2019utilisent facilement.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Au fur et \u00e0 mesure de l\u2019avanc\u00e9e des connaissances en physique et en chimie, nous avons d\u00e9couvert de plus en plus de moyens de transformer ces combustibles fossiles en \u00e9nergie pour nos logements, nos transports ou notre industrie, mais aussi en produits chimiques bien pratiques. N\u00e9anmoins, vers la fin du vingti\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, nous avons \u00e9galement appris que l\u2019utilisation de combustibles fossiles et le rejet de dioxyde de carbone ancien dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re perturbaient le syst\u00e8me climatique. Ainsi, nous avons d\u00e9couvert une cause du r\u00e9chauffement plan\u00e9taire et d\u2019autres sympt\u00f4mes du changement climatique rapide. Celui-ci \u00e9tait, et est encore, en grande partie caus\u00e9 par les combustibles fossiles, car la majorit\u00e9 des \u00e9missions de CO2 proviennent de la combustion du charbon, du p\u00e9trole ou du gaz. C\u2019est pourquoi il est aussi capital de nous d\u00e9barrasser de notre addiction \u00e0 ces combustibles pour r\u00e9soudre ce probl\u00e8me. En 2021, l\u2019Agence internationale de l\u2019\u00e9nergie (AIE) a soutenu les conclusions du GIEC : ne plus construire de nouvelles infrastructures pour les combustibles fossiles est une strat\u00e9gie cl\u00e9 pour ne pas d\u00e9passer les limites de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 d\u2019augmentation de la temp\u00e9rature mondiale.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Nos \u00e9conomies intenses en combustibles fossiles g\u00e9n\u00e8rent aussi de la pollution localement, chaque fois qu\u2019ils sont utilis\u00e9s : les d\u00e9versements de p\u00e9trole et les d\u00e9chets miniers empoisonnent l\u2019eau et les sols, le m\u00e9thane fuit des gazoducs, les \u00e9missions d\u2019oxyde d\u2019azote issues de la combustion contribuent au smog et aux pluies acides, tandis que les particules fines nuisent aux poumons et entra\u00eenent des d\u00e9c\u00e8s pr\u00e9matur\u00e9s. Le probl\u00e8me des \u00e9nergies fossiles ne concerne donc pas que leurs effets \u00e0 long terme sur le syst\u00e8me climatique, mais aussi leurs cons\u00e9quences plus imm\u00e9diates et tangibles pour la nature et les humains.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Heureusement, gr\u00e2ce aux progr\u00e8s en physique et en chimie, nous d\u00e9couvrons de nouvelles fa\u00e7ons de produire de l\u2019\u00e9nergie, qui n\u2019impliquent pas ces ressources fossiles non renouvelables qui r\u00e9chauffent et polluent la Terre. Les sources d\u2019\u00e9nergies renouvelables, comme l\u2019\u00e9olien et le solaire, deviennent progressivement plus accessibles. Comme ils sont liquides, ces carburants \u00e9taient plus simples \u00e0 utiliser que les solides (comme le charbon) ou les gaz. Une solution id\u00e9ale, donc, pour les v\u00e9hicules. Leur densit\u00e9 en \u00e9nergie les rendait particuli\u00e8rement adapt\u00e9s aux voitures, car ils leur permettaient d\u2019\u00eatre plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res et de voyager sur de plus longues distances. Ainsi, les d\u00e9riv\u00e9s du p\u00e9trole ont rapidement domin\u00e9 le secteur des transports. Aujourd\u2019hui, nous constatons des efforts pour d\u00e9carboner ce secteur. La technologie des batteries a notamment progress\u00e9, entra\u00eenant une chute drastique de leur co\u00fbt et d\u2019importants projets de construction d\u2019infrastructures pour les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques. De nouvelles approches pour les carburants des avions, des bateaux et des poids lourds apparaissent.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certains d\u00e9riv\u00e9s du p\u00e9trole sont \u00e9galement employ\u00e9s pour produire de la chaleur et de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, mais ces pratiques changent. En effet, on observe une diminution constante de leur part dans la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, qui atteint d\u00e9sormais<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/charts\/world-electricity-generation-mix-by-fuel-1971-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moins de 3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, selon l\u2019AIE. Les d\u00e9fis du secteur des transports seront difficiles \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre, mais nous disposons d\u00e9j\u00e0 de beaucoup de moyens de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer de la chaleur et de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 qui sont bien meilleurs et plus propres que les combustibles fossiles.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En dehors des transports, du chauffage et de l\u2019\u00e9nergie, un \u00e9ventail de processus de raffinage du p\u00e9trole ont fait na\u00eetre une famille enti\u00e8re de produits : les produits p\u00e9trochimiques. Ils interviennent largement dans la production des plastiques, des fibres et de la gomme synth\u00e9tique, mais aussi de multiples produits chimiques industriels, comme les solvants, les d\u00e9tergents et les teintures. Leur production repr\u00e9sente environ 12 % de la demande mondiale de p\u00e9trole, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-future-of-petrochemicals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> l\u2019AIE. Les produits p\u00e9trochimiques se retrouvent dans des objets du quotidien, comme les v\u00eatements ou les emballages, mais aussi \u00ab dans de nombreuses parties du syst\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique moderne, notamment les panneaux solaires, les pales d\u2019\u00e9oliennes, les batteries, l\u2019isolation thermique des b\u00e2timents et les pi\u00e8ces des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques \u00bb.
